The December Moon
Last night was a treat for sky watching; the whole sky was brighter than usual and we could see far into the horizon of the rural landscape due to the bigger and brighter full moon. Into the late night, it appeared the December Moon sat high above us, directly above the house from 10 pm onward. December 12th harkened in the December Moon, or one of its early American folklore moon names, The Christmas Moon. Coincidentally, because December’s nights are the longest nights of the year, the Christmas Moon has also been coined the, “Long Night Moon.” (Old Farmer’s Almanac)
It is the biggest, brightest full moon of 2008. Typically, the December moon is brighter than her sister moons each calendar year. National Geographic stated this December full moon is approximately 30% brighter and 14% larger than the other 11 full moons this calendar year. However, this year the December Moon is the brightest we have seen in about 15 years.
